HearthSong - Halloween Costumes

Doctor =white or blue shirt and pants, perferably something that looks like scrubs, with a play stethoscope around their neck. You could also add a matching color shower cap if you wanted for the surgeon.

Mechanic = Blue or black pants with a light blue or gray collared shirt. Use a piece of masking tape and a Sharpie pen (Black) and on one side of the shirt make a label that says the mechanics name kike "Bob" and make another label for the other side of the shirt that says something like "Joe's Auto Repair". You can add a matching color ball cap if you have one just remember to cover up any words on the front of the ball cap with your own label, again with tape that also says "Joe's Auto Repair".

Construction Worker =Blue jeans with any type of shirt tucked in with a tool belt and hard hat. The toolbelt can be either store bought or homemade by using a regular belt and fastening plastic toy tools to it. The hard hat is easily purchased at a Dollar Store in the toy department. If your child doesn't already have a play hard hat you might be able to borrow one from friends or your church, if they have childcare. I might use face paint to put some freckles on the gardeners face.

Cowboy or Cowgirl =Of course, a Cowboy/Cowgirl hat, western shirt or regular flannel shitrt and blue jeans, a play holster...the normal attire you would see a cowboy or cowgirl wearing.

Football or Baseball Player =This could be a little harder if your child doesn't have access to any sports wear but maybe an older sibbling does or you you know a friend that might consider loaning you a football helmet or a baseball shirt. You might also consider checking a child's second-hand clothing store.

Golfer =The normal golfing wear, polo shirt, dress pants and belt, hat and a child's size plastic golf club to carry.

Princess or Good Fairy  =This is wear I would definately check out the second hand stores for a lacey netting skirt even an adult size that you can cut with scissors and make the length fit. A satin or sparkling blouse, then add a tierra for the head and she can carry a wand.

A Gardener = A flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up neatly to the elbow. A pair of blue jeans with the legs neatly rolled up once. A straw hat and for a girl you may want to place a big artificial flower in the hat. The gardener can carry a plastic watering can to put their candy in.

A Mouse =A black or gray turtleneck shirt with black or grey stretch pants, black socks and shoes and black or gray gloves if you have them. Using a cardboard box and cut out a long, skinny, wavy tail and two large mouse ears. Aluminum foil can also be used to form ears and a tail. Paint the ears and tail black or gray to match the body suit. Tape the mouse ears to a girls plastic head band and attach the tail with really sticky tape such as, duct tape. Paint the duct tape black if necessary. Use face paint to decorate the face.

A Bad Storm Worker =All the yellow rain gear you can think of. The Bad Storm Worker can carry a bucket for his or her candy.

A Chef =A long, white shirt and white pants would be good but necessary if the shirt is long. A Chef's hat which can be made using a brown paper bag, folded in a rolled fashion at the bottom, taped in shape to fit and then spray painted white.  A red-checkered apron would give a nice affect but if you don't have one, just simply go to the Dollar store and pick up a dollar red-checkered plastic tablecloth and cut an apron out of it with scissors. The Chef can carry a picnic basket for his or her candy which also can be made from a straw-weaved basket or another idea would be the cloth grocery bags you can purchase now at almost any grocery store. I would for the extra effect have a stalk of celery sticking out of the bag when the Chef approaches the trick or treat door.

A Magician =Black pants and shirt, black socks and shoes. A black hat of some type would be nice. Black face paint maybe a moustache or thickened eyebrows. A black cape that can be made using a black towel. The Magician can carry a wand and I would have a small stuffed toy animal either peaking out from under the hat, attached in place with tape, or let the magician pull the stuffed animal toy out of his trick or treat bag when he or she approaches the door. So there's no question about it...Using masking tape and a black magic marker, I would make a label for the front of the shirt that says something like "Jack's Magic Show".

Dorothy =From The Wizard of Oz. The white shirt and blue checkered dress, red shoes, hair in pig-tails tied with blue ribbon, face makeup for rosey-red cheeks and a stuffed little dog toy under Dorothy's arm to represent ToTo.

Tips...

Halloween Trick or Treat bags or buckets can be purchased rather cheap these days with so many Dollar Stores around but keep in mind you can also use the new material type grocery store shopping bags at low cost or anykind of basket with a handle or bucket or unusual container with a handle. Girls can use large old purses and boys can use old school backpacks.

A lot of things can be made out of aluminum foil and pretty much shaped into anything of any size including tails, haha.

Be sure to bring a drink for yourself and your child. This is when you can actually wear a backpack yourself. Along with the water for drinking you can put the necessary other items you might need in the backpack such as, band-aides, medicine, wet wipes, tissue, flashlight and so on.

Never leave your child unattended or allow them to approach a stranger's door with an adult present.

Teach your child to look both ways before crossing the street and never assume that moving cars see you.

Always Trick or Treat in groups when possible, carry a cell phone and a flash light.

Check all candy, cookies or fruit before eating.

And...most of all, always be watchful of your surroundings. Trick or Treat in well-known areas.
